Caring for a Parent With Dementia, What No One Tells You About Assisted Living and Family Stress

In this episode of The Watsons: Stronger Together, we are talking about something a lot of families are living through, caring for an aging parent, while still trying to love them well, keep them safe, and keep your sanity. We sit down as siblings to share what it has been like caring for our 91 year old father, a charismatic former teacher with a big personality, and now, the very real challenges of dementia. We talk about the hard parts people do not always say out loud, hoarding, sleep issues, vulnerability to scams, and the emotional whiplash of seeing someone you love change in front of you.

We also reflect on how we were raised, two loving, community minded parents, not a lot of money, and a lot of faith, and how the “do not air dirty laundry” mindset can make caregiving feel even heavier. We debate the question so many families wrestle with, can you expect real behaviour change when cognitive decline is part of the picture, and what do you do when safety has to come first.

We share what has helped us most so far, moving him closer into assisted living, adult day care, caregiver support, church, physical therapy, and staying connected to community. We even get into caregiving across cultures, the cost of care, and some future looking ideas like tech support and capturing family stories.
